We are aware of the recent Wayland – Wellesley – Natick issues with PFAS – PFOA chemicals being detected in town waters. We have been installing correct and highly effective filter systems in Acton, Hudson, Shrewsbury, Woburn, Cape Cod and other towns over the past 2 years. These chemicals, related to the manufacture of Teflon, Gor-Tex fabrics, Scotchguard and firefighting foam are highly toxic even in low parts per trillion (PPT). They are referred to as “forever chemicals” as they do not degrade naturally. The original EPA Advisory was for 70 PPT but New Hampshire passed stricter regulations for 12 PPT for PFAS and 18 PPT for PFOA. MA has recently passed a 20 ppt limit. The actual safe levels for chemicals this dangerous is more likely 0 PPT. Is there a whole house filter that can achieve this? Yes! We have post installation testing done at ETR Labs in Leominster for the whole house Enpress “Pioneer” filter system. The results were undetectable for 8 of the most common PFAS PFOA chemicals.
For the Whole House: The EPA recommends activated carbon for P-P removal/reduction. Traditionally, two large tanks filled with granulated, activated carbon are used for this application. Despite their size, in order to have enough contact time in the carbon media, flow rates cannot exceed 3.5 gallons per minute. Many families need 6 to 10 GPM and even more for large homes with bigger families. The above described filter design can never be NSF Certified for any health rating such as NSF 53 Health Rating for P-P removal. Enpress “Pioneer” was developed for this reason. ENPRESS PIONEER – Low Res
Pioneer is a single cartridge floor tank developed specifically to tackle difficult to remove contaminates Pioneer is the only whole house filter with an NSF 53 Health Rating for both P-P & Lead removal. P-P removal is 97.9% and both soluble and insoluble lead @ 99.62% all at 8 Gallons Per Minute (GPM). Pioneer has a computerized gallon measuring system with LED color coded cartridge warning life indicators. Each cartridge is rated for 100,000 gallons with an additional 20,000 safety reserve. Pioneer also removes/reduces a vast number of other chemical impurities found in tap water. In smaller homes, a single Pioneer may be installed but 2 and even 3 are needed in bigger homes with bigger piping and water usage.
Pioneer cartridges utilize a 0.5 micron pore size and must be protected with suitable pre-filtration sediment or sediment/carbon combo filter to prevent clogging of cartridge. Pioneer produces amazing quality, virtual spring water throughout your home.
Reverse Osmosis for Drinking/Cooking Water Under Sink Filter: RO is recommended by the EPA for P-P reduction but none are NSF Certified for this presently. The available information suggests 94 – 99% reduction rates for P-P for RO. It is certainly logical to suggest that if a basic carbon filter is installed in the basement, both filters could combine to create undetectable results but this is not certain or guaranteed. It is more than likely that with the whole house Pioneer filtration tank and an added RO for drinking water filter, that the RO water will have no detectable levels for PFOA – PFAS. We do have independent test results for a recent Acton, MA install where Pioneer alone was able to reduce PFOA PFAS to non detectable in PPT.

PFAS – PFOA – Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration

Reverse Osmosis is one of the EPA recommended methods of removing/reducing PFAS PFOA chemicals. Estimates are 94 to 99% removal. These are usually installed under the kitchen sink. RO filters removes a wide spectrum of contaminants at percentages much higher than most whole house filters are capable of. All RO’s require an additional, smaller faucet to be added at the kitchen sink.
RO filters remove/reduce PFAS PFOA, chlorine, chloramine, chlorides, fluoride, lead, arsenic, industrial chemicals, bacteria, viruses, radon in water, nitrates, chromium as well as a myriad of other contaminates.
At ThinkPureWater, we use the most modern and efficient RO made. The WOW or Water on Water is actually a 4 stage unit as the first cartridge is a combination sediment/carbon type. The WOW is the only 100% made in the U.S. RO. It is the only BPA free RO made and also has the fastest recovery available. The WOW has the lowest water to drain ratio at just 2 gallons to drain to 1 gallon to tank. The tank holds 1.5 gallons. This RO unit total cost is $1,375 – $1,675 for complete install including a closely matching Tomlinson RO faucet, leak protector and all additional tube & parts.
RO Service Cost: 1st year $207 including 2 cartridges of pre-filter & post filter, tax, labor, trip and disposal. These 2 cartridges need to be replaced yearly, possibly earlier, depending on the amount of sediment in your water. 2nd year $327 including the same 2 cartridges of 1st year plus the RO membrane.
RO pH Reminerlizer Option After installing an RO unit, your water pH will be lowered from average 7.5 to about 6.8. Many clients love straight RO water. RO water is so pure, that some people prefer a more mineralized taste. We can add an ultra premium Vitev pH remineralizer to raise the pH to mid 7’s or mid 8’s depending on which model. The Vitev is made in the US and uses coral calcium from Okinawa, tourmaline, ultra pure magnesium as well as 70 trace minerals. Vitev also has a BPA free casing with 3rd party purity certifications. The cost is roughly $197 additional if installed during RO installation. An additional charge of $95 will apply for a second trip & labor. Water Softener – Whole House Carbon Filtration Wellesley MA
Wellesley MA water is sourced from a group of 10 different wells. Although the water is only moderately hard at 6 grains per gallon, it has the usual variety of disinfectant chemicals and a pretty heavy sediment load. TPW has quite a few installs in town and can testify to the water’s condition. Without a softener or salt free TAC scale control system, heating and plumbing equipment will become badly affected by hard scale. The filter setup below begins with our WH3500-IT Whole House Trio Unit. Water enters on the right and all particulate down to 5 microns is captured by the sediment cartridge. With a clear housing, you can see what is going on. They don’t stay white for long. In the next two housings we use 2 different types of natural activated coconut shell carbon blocks that produce spring water-like quality throughout the home. Next the water passes through an Ion Exchange Softener which leaves the water extremely luxurious. If you have no filtration or softener and install both, you are in for a real treat! We have actually had reports of persistent skin conditions clearing up completely but no health claims are made here. This system is sized for modest sized home. Water Softener and Filtration – Sudbury MA
This Sudbury MA installation was installed for a growing family of 4 who moved into a bigger, 5 bedroom home in the same town. In this install we utilized the modern, solderers Viega ProPress System. TPW engineered the flow rate for 16 gallon per minute peak use by using 1.25″ piping and a 1.25″ control head. Water first enters an Italian made 4.5″ x 20″ housing with a hybrid sediment/carbon filter cartridge. This filter removes sediment/dirt, chlorine and the brunt of chemical impurities. This filter is replaced every 12 months and protects the softener resin from chlorine fouling. Next is a 2 cube, cation resin water softener which removes calcium, magnesium and staining minerals, iron & manganese. Next is a top loading single cartridge filter tank that will produce virtual spring water like quality throughout the home. Showering and bathing in water of this purity is an amazing experience and is an essential ingredient for overall wellness. This cartridge is replaced every 150,000 gallons or every 24 months.
